Understanding hypnotherapy

What is Hypnotherapy?

Hypnotherapy is a safe and natural way of working with your mind to create positive change.

It involves a state of focused attention — similar to being absorbed in a book, a film, or your own thoughts — where your mind becomes more open to helpful suggestions and new ways of responding.

You remain aware and in control at all times.

A natural state of mind

Most people experience this state every day without realising it.

It’s that moment when you drift into your thoughts while driving, or lose track of time when you’re focused on something.

Hypnotherapy simply uses this natural ability in a more structured and purposeful way.

Why hypnotherapy can be effective

Many of our thoughts, habits, and emotional responses happen automatically.

This is why it can feel difficult to change things using willpower alone.

Hypnotherapy helps you work at a deeper level, where these patterns are formed, allowing them to shift in a way that feels more natural and lasting.

Common questions

Will I lose control?
No. You are always aware of what is happening and can respond at any time.

Can I be made to do something against my will?
No. Hypnotherapy is a collaborative process, and you remain in control throughout.

What does it feel like?
Most people describe it as deeply relaxing. You may feel calm, focused, and slightly removed from everyday distractions while still being aware.

My approach

I believe that real change begins when people feel understood, supported, and able to reconnect with their own inner strengths.

My role is to guide you through that process using hypnotherapy alongside other practical, evidence-informed approaches.

Every session is tailored to you. There is no one-size-fits-all method.

Not sure if hypnotherapy is right for you?

If you have never experienced hypnotherapy before, it is completely normal to have questions or feel a little uncertain.

Many people find it helpful to have a brief chat before booking, just to ask questions and get a sense of how I work.

If you would like to do that, simply send me a message and I will call you back as soon as I can.

There is no pressure to book. The purpose of the call is simply to help you feel informed, comfortable, and confident about your next step.

Frequently asked questions about hypnotherapy

What is hypnotherapy?

Modern hypnotherapy uses a variety of different techniques to help a person to manage stress, relaxation, and thoughts, as well as habits and behaviours. It's about tapping into your inner resources to create positive change.

What makes hypnotherapy different from other types of therapy?

Hypnotherapy is a very safe therapy and is brief. It tends to work more quickly than traditional talking therapies. It helps people to think better and handle life better by utilising the power of the unconscious mind.

How does hypnotherapy work?

During a session, you'll sit up in a nice comfortable chair and Rae will talk to you to help you relax. Hypnosis is very similar to daydreaming. In this state, your unconscious mind is more receptive to positive suggestions, allowing for effective shifts in thought patterns and behaviours. You remain aware and in control throughout the process.

What problems can hypnotherapy help with?

Hypnotherapy can effectively help with a range of issues including anxiety, fears and phobias, stress, problematic thoughts, and breaking unwanted habits and addictions.

What are common worries people have about hypnotherapy?

It's common to worry that it won't work, or about being controlled and doing things you don't want to do, or even fear of becoming stuck in hypnosis. Rest assured, you are always in control, aware, and can easily emerge from hypnosis at any time. It's a collaborative process where we work together towards your goals.

Is hypnotherapy safe for everyone?

For most people, hypnotherapy is very safe. However, if you have certain medical conditions, it's always best to discuss them with your GP and with Rae Jenson before starting treatment to ensure it's the right approach for you.
